Description of the Organization

Koops Automation is a company with 200-300 employees with locations based in Michigan, South Carolina, and Mexico. Koops provides their customers with factory automation systems. A large number of Koops' customers are in the automotive industry, with other customers in medical or other industries.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I built and wired a panel to run a machine, I built, modified, and tuned that machine, and I also programmed a small portion of it. I also went on various service trips both in and out of state, refurbishing and fixing old machines.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I learned to work with customers in customer plants, as well as working with other engineers to make changes to faulty designs. I worked both on teams to address customer needs as well as independently. I gained a general knowledge of how the industry functions and what to expect in the future when working as an employee as well as when working with customers.

Favorite Part of the Experience

I enjoyed the opportunity to work on the road and work with the customers. I also enjoyed the large variety of work required in service, from engineering, to building, and to programming.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This co-op helped confirm that engineering is the correct career path for me and also showed me that I may want an engineering job in the future that has a bit more hands on work.
