Description of the Organization
An MSP forensic scientist performs a variety of tests; identification and classification of mechanical devices; analyses of chemical, biochemical, biological, liquids and physical substances for criminal prosecutions submitted by law enforcement. Forensic scientists respond to crime scene investigations and collect physical evidence for laboratory processing. Trained scientists write detailed reports and testify in court to their results.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
Completed a 10-week rotational internship where I gained exposure to multiple units including Body Fluid Identification, DNA, Firearms and Toolmarks, Latent Prints, Seized Drugs, Trace Evidence, and Crime Scene Response. Observed forensic techniques, laboratory instrumentation, and evidence analysis across disciplines.Concluded the internship with a capstone project in which I analyzed a criminal case by applying multiple forensic disciplines to evaluate and interpret the evidence.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I learned proper evidence handling procedures, including chain of custody, documentation, and contamination prevention. As well as general knowledge in each specific unit.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My Favorite part of this Internship was building meaningful relationships with MSP workers and getting clarity on what I want to do with my Career!
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
I have more direction with what specific unit I am interested in working in and I have a general understanding of all units and how they work together. I have also had exposure to other agencies that I could potentially work for.
