Description of the Organization

Panduit is a global corporation headquartered in Tinley Park, IL, with over 5000 employees. It is a leading provider of electrical infrastructure solutions for various industries, such as data centers, enterprises, industrial networks, OEMs, and contract manufacturers. Panduit boasts a legacy of innovation, with 2000 patents to its name.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

During my rotation, I worked on several tasks. One task involved designing an informative chart for Panduit customers and employees to easily access information on ferrules (which is a product that reinforces stranded wire), their compatible tools, and optimal usage. Moreover, I developed a solution for a testing fixture, enabling engineers to conduct tests on one of our tools. Also, I contributed to the ideation, design, and testing of a product that secures cables in the case of a short circuit event, or disaster. This included collaborative brainstorming, and working directly with an engineer to model, fabricate, and test different solutions. I was able to help design multiple prototypes, then later see it in real life after it was made. In addition to my tasks, I was able to visit one of Panduitýs toolshops. This toolshop is dedicated to research, development, and rapid prototyping. I observed specialists in sheet metal fabrication, 3D printing, EDM machines, CNC milling, and molding design.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

There are many skills I gained or improved upon. I expanded my understanding of electrical infrastructure products. During my experience, I learned a significant amount about how certain products can be produced during my visit to the toolroom. I honed my existing design skills and gained valuable perspective on the ideation and creative process involved in designing new products. Also, I increased my proficiency in Microsoft Excel, as well as NX (CAD program).

Favorite Part of the Experience

Visiting the toolroom was a highlight for me, as I got to see and learn more about incredible machines and their capabilities. I also enjoyed collaborating with other engineers and drafters on projects and working directly with an innovative engineer.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This rotation deepened my love for the design process in engineering. I am now looking forward to solving new problems and improving upon my creative process. I am also excited for new challenges going forward. I know now that I enjoy an increased level of responsibility.
