KCON Faculty Profile Intern at GVSU

Experience Information

Employer: Grand Valley State University, Kirkhof College of Nursing
Job Title: KCON Faculty Profile Intern
Major: Writing
Received Credit: Yes

Description of the Organization

GVSU's Kirkhof College of Nursing (KCON) was established in 1973. Over the years, it has grown to the point that it now offers students nursing degrees from the bachelors level, to the masters level, all the way to the doctoral level.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

My job as an intern was to create profiles for 56 nursing faculty members to go on KCON's website as a replacement for a couple PDFs that listed faculty names with their office locations and contact information.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

Through this internship, I learned how to write consistent faculty biographies and how to make compromises to consistency when necessary. I also learned how to use computer software that I had never heard of but that is used in the world outside of GVSU. Besides these things, I gained valuable experience in communicating professionally and had the pleasure of learning how universities work in terms of faculty ranking.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of this experience is that I had the opportunity to make an important contribution to the Kirkhof College of Nursing and in turn Grand Valley as a whole. The profiles I created will soon be part of the website for anyone to see and will make KCON look even more impressive than it already does. In other words, my favorite part of the experience was my Laker Effect!

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

My career goal has been to eventually become a medical copy editor, but I have also had some interest in working for GVSU or GRCC (where I earned my associate's degree). Although I still love copy editing, this internship has increased my desire to work for GVSU (or GRCC) long term in some capacity.
