Description of the Organization

Organizing for America is a community organizing project of the Democratic National Committee. We are working primarily to re-elect President Obama, while also working with Winnie Brinks, Steve Pestka, and others.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

As an intern I got to do a wide variety of work, everything from phone banks to canvassing. I was appointed to the position of Canvass Captain and worked under my staging location director to set up and organize the canvassing for the weekend, tally numbers, and report them. I also registered voters on campus, did data entry, and worked to get volunteers.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I definitely learned what it takes to run a campaign. The organization, forethought and effort needed is phenomenal. I learned how to organize and throw events for canvassing and how to effectively coordinate people.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part was getting to meet so many diverse people, and not just those I worked with but the people I met through canvassing and getting volunteers.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

It has shown me what it really takes to not only run for office, but to work in campaigns as a full time member and I'll definitely be keeping this experience in mind when I think about political careers.
