Signal integrity / Power integrity Co-op Experience

Experience Information

Employer: E3 Compliance
Job Title: SIPI Co-op Strudent
Major: Electrical Engineering
Received Credit: Yes
Paid: Yes
Abroad: No

Description of the Organization

E3 Compliance is an engineering consultation and pre-compliance testing laboratory. It specializes in electromagnetic compatibility pre-compliance testing and high-speed design analysis. E3 is situated in the EMC laboratory located in the Innovation and Design Center in Downtown Grand Rapids.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

As a SIPI co-op student, I performed time-domain and frequency-domain measurements on customer products. I also performed EMC pre-compliance testing on customer products, as well as networked and discussed various engineering topics with customers.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I specifically learned small-component soldering techniques, how to take measurements on printed-circuit boards using o-scopes and network analyzers, simulation tools for signal / power integrity, and the sources of electromagnetic interference.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part was the opportunity to network and chat with companies at the lab. Testing their products allowed for ample time to discuss their knowledge of engineering and to talk about their company / other companies around the world.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

I realized while working at E3 Compliance that EMC is an increasing problem with products around the world. The knowledge and skills I have obtained here can be used in any electrical design job, as proper design and knowledge of EMC/EMI can decrease the time and money it takes for products to pass compliance and go onto the market.
