Major: Sport Management

Description of the Organization

GVSU Campus Recreation is a department of GVSU and offers several programs to students and the rest of the GVSU community including Health/Fitness, Outdoor Adventures, and Sports. My internship worked specifically with the Sports Program which typically has 2-3 full-time staff, approximately 30-40 part-time student staff, and includes over 50 club sports programs. The sports program serves approximately 2000 students through club sports and 4000 students through intramural sports.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

Weekly tasks consisted of email correspondence with clubs, meetings & professional development, article writing, and website management. Some of the larger projects completed throughout the internship were hosting the NIRSA Regional Soccer Tournament, NCDA Dodgeball Nationals, and Club Sports Olympics.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

This internship provided me with knowledge in the areas of website management, content creation, social media promotion, and photo editing. These are all crucial aspects to have to enter the sport management industry and I would not have gained the necessary knowledge without this internship.

Favorite Part of the Experience

The best part of my experience was getting the opportunity to host a national tournament. It is a great event to add to my resume and it is an experience I can bring to other institutions following my time at Grand Valley. Having the knowledge of what is required to host a national event is something very few people have experience with prior to graduating.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

My internship has helped me to realize I want to pursue a career in campus recreation and work with a club sports program in the future. The internship provided me with the necessary experience and opportunities to receive a graduate assistant position for a club sports program.
