Description of the Organization

The Grand Rapids Griffins are a professional hockey team in the American Hockey League (AHL). They are the primary affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings of the NHL. The Griffins organization is considered by many to be one of the top organizations in the AHL, in terms of ticket sales, attendance, and they way they do business.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

When I was interning with the Grand Rapids Griffins I was in charge of select concourse areas on game nights, as well as working in the box office with the ticketing operations team. There were times that we as interns had special projects to take care of, this meant coming in on weekends and overseeing the cross ice jamboree and season ticket holder events. I also monitored post game autograph sessions and jersey auctions that took place throughout the regular season.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

The skills and knowledge that I gained through my experience with the Grand Rapids Griffins were great. I was able to learn how the box office works on game nights and am now familiar with the ticketing system, which is transferable experience that can cross over into other organizations. I think the biggest thing I learned from working with Griffins is how to become a professional. If you are in a setting that constantly allows you to meet professional athletes it is crucial to treat them with respect.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part about my experience was working the Cross Ice Jamboree. Working this event allowed me to manage over 15 mini mite hockey teams and oversee the event. It was great to work with kids all day and see how much passion and excitement they had for hockey. I was mainly in charge of gathering the teams together when their game time was called and acting as the liaison between the hockey teams and Griffins personnel.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

My experience with the Griffins was great and it really helped me determine what I would like to do with my professional career. I realized while working with the Griffins that I love professional sports but my true passion is in recruiting and player development. I understand that recruiting doesn't have anything to do with the Griffins, but sometimes working in opposite interests allows you to find what you are truly passionate about and come to a clear decision about your career goals.
