Description of the Organization
MAGNA Mirrors is a large international company, at the Holland Location there are 2 buildings with 50-70 people working in the offices in each building and more on the production floors for each shift. Being in the project engineering group I've worked close with the project and manufacturing engineers who make sure production runs smoothly and efficiently and new product launches meet their deadlines while solving quality problems of new and service mirrors.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
The main project I worked on this semester was creating a design and a Bill of Materials for a new suitcase tester for mirror programs that are being rewarded to MAGNA. This involved working with the Project Managers and Project Engineers at the Holland Location as well as consulting the Electrical Engineers at the 36th St location. I also tested a new chemical composition in mirrors that would allow our facility to save around $40,000 if testing is giving adequate results.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I learned more about some aspects of design and trying to reduce heat in electrical devices. I also learned more about the process of what happens at this plant and how mirrors are tested before being sent out or before a new change is implemented.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part of this rotation was being able to take the lead on a project that held a much more substantial purpose to it. I also liked doing the testing because it was something I could do at my own pace and it would give me a break from other projects.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
It has given me more resume building experience, and it has given me an insight into what I want to look for in a company to work at after graduation.
