Job Title: Manufacturing Engineer Intern
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Received Credit: Yes

Description of the Organization

Genesis Seating is a furniture manufacturing company that assembles and ships the furniture to companies like Herman-Miller, Steelcase, and Haworth. There are a few hundred employees that work in the building at a time with a mixture of working in the office or assembling furniture on the floor.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I walked around the assembly floor observing and analyzing assemblies, and come up with concepts to make assemblies more simple and efficient. I'd spend time making drawings of these concepts on SolidWorks and once the drawings were complete and approved, I'd build them in the maintenance area. Some of these projects involved making concepts/building an assembly table, mobile carts, and a hitch to connect carts together.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I learned how to properly and efficiently use various metalwork machines in the maintenance room like a bandsaw, manual milling machine/drill press with various bit and tap sizes, and a threading machine. I also learned how to weld, use 2D CAD, and more advanced features in SolidWorks.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of having an internship at Genesis Seating was getting to know and interact with some great people. Genesis Seating has a really family friendly atmosphere. I also loved learning how to weld and build various carts from scratch.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

My experience at Genesis Seating taught me what I can expect to be assigned when I'm employed full time as an engineer. During my job, I loved working on my feet and interacting with people.
