Gentex Corporation is a global automotive, aerospace, and fire protection supplier. They specialize in automatic-dimming rear-view mirrors, camera-based driver assistance systems, and the HomeLink Wireless Control System. The company size is around five thousand employees with locations in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, China, Japan, and South Korea. Their top products include full display, automatic dimming mirrors that use a camera to display from the rear of the vehicle, and automatic dimming headlights. The co-op is based in Zeeland, MI.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
As a Test Engineer, I create tests that verify the software on the product to ensure it follows the customers' requirements for various features and functions. I focused on LIN Conformance testing, which consists of several different tests that determine if the mirror or part meets specified requirements. Iýve also worked on testing diagnostics and features that Gentex incorporated in most of their mirrors as well as customer-specified diagnostics.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I advanced my knowledge and skills with National Instruments TestStand and VeriStand. TestStand is the testing environment that Gentex uses to test the software on the mirrors and VeriStand is used to create an interface between TestStand and the product. I also gained experience working with LIN Conformance testing and operating and display protocols.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part of this co-op was being able to take more ownership and responsibility of my work.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
My past two co-op experiences with Gentex along with my third have all reassured me of my passion for engineering and that I want to work in embedded systems.
