Experience Information

Employer: Synergy Consulting Engineers Inc
Job Title: Facility Engineering Intern
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Received Credit: Yes
Paid: Yes
Abroad: No

Description of the Organization

Synergy is a smaller MEP consulting firm, with fewer than 50 employees. We work alongside architects to solve internal infrastructure problems, whether that be new construction, renovation, or commissioning current equipment. There are 3 main engineering teams: facilities engineering services, facilities performance engineering, and facilities intelligence. These teams are primarily located in Belmont and Royal Oak, Michigan, with a few employees in Tampa, Florida as well. We focus mainly on larger commercial projects (focusing on critical spaces) but are versatile as a consulting firm.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I was responsible for multiple diagram deliverables, including HVAC zoning maps and piping and instrumentation diagrams for what I would consider to be large commercial facilities. For both of these projects I also visited the site to help assess the systems. I also assisted in designing the duct layout for a smaller building, setting up existing HVAC equipment in software, and updating company software templates in order to improve workflow.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I would say I gained the most knowledge in regard to industry standard computer programs. I had never used Revit, Revu, or really any of the other online tools we use. This internship gave me a lot of experience in learning new technology, as well as how to research something I'm unfamiliar with and ask productive questions. I learned much about the corporate entity, such as workflow and what it takes to run a good meeting. As can be assumed, I also gained a better understanding of basic engineering principles, and I learned a great deal about diagramming and design. I also learned more about how to effectively collaborate with others, as I was rarely working on a project completely alone.

Favorite Part of the Experience

I really enjoyed the camaraderie that was built within the team. Everyone that I worked with was very approachable and willing to help me with anything that I was struggling with. While work was the main priority, it was fun to have little moments going out to lunch as a team, going to get ice cream, or playing ping pong on the conference table. Our company summit was a blast, bringing the whole company together in Detroit for 3 days to build a greater community.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This experience has opened my eyes to a career path that I never saw myself taking. I had previously thought that I would wind up in a product design setting, but the scope and challenge of building systems is something I've come to enjoy. I love the problem-solving skills that are required to work in a consulting setting, and I feel I gained good insight as to how I can better solve problems wherever I go. I have also further realized the importance of good team chemistry in tackling projects in an effective manner.
