Body Composition

Hydrostatic Weighing

Hydrostatic weighing is recognized as the gold standard in body composition assessment and the criterion used when comparing other methods. In this facility, we utilize our underwater weighing set-up (load cell, seat, and water tank) to determine body density and thus body composition.

Skinfolds

The sum of skinfolds can determine the composition of fat and lean tissue in the body, and is quick and easy to perform. The results can mark progress for an athlete or be compared to suggested optimal values for a given sport. This is a great method if testing a large group of athletes. The test can range from a basic 3-site up to a comprehensive 20-site assessment.

Basal Metabolic Rate

Metabolism describes how the body uses this energy to meet all of the body’s demands even when physical work is required. Knowledge of your basal metabolic rate can be important to help create personal training plans, design eating schedules for ultra-endurance events, monitor body composition in the off-season or improve health status. This test is performed whilst you are rested and lying quietly, and connected to one of our metabolic carts.
