Project Abstract

This project is sponsored by Autocam Medical. Many of the surgical drill bits they manufacture require a buffing operation to remove overspray from a coating on the bit as well as small surface defects. The process is currently being done manually. To improve quality and increase the speed of the operation, the sponsor wanted to automate the entire buffing process. The machine built by the senior project team takes drill bits from a pallet and inserts it into an air chuck that spins the bit. The buffing wheel is brought toward the bit and exerts constant pressure through the use of pneumatic pressure tables, to buff the end of the bit.
