October 2025 Board of Trustees Update

On October 24, 2025, the GVSU Board of Trustees acted on several items related to GVSU-authorized charter public schools.
First, the Board approved the reauthorization of the following four schools with the recommended lengths of their new charter contracts:
- Excel Charter Academy (7 years)
- Hanley International Academy (7 years)
- Metro Charter Academy (5 years)
- Vanguard Charter Academy (7 years)
Next, the Board approved name changes for Kalamazoo Covenant Academy (renamed Kalamazoo Prep Academy) and Muskegon Covenant Academy (renamed Muskegon Lakeshore High School & Career Center).
The Board also approved the appointment of 14 new charter school board members. The GVSU Charter Schools Office is excited to welcome the following individuals as new board members for GVSU-authorized charter schools:

- Maquetta Hall -- Eagle's Nest Academy
- Susan Emery -- East Arbor Charter Academy
- Ashley Davis -- Endeavor Charter Academy
- DeAndre Rogers -- Grand River Academy
- James Lewis -- Light of the World Academy
- Benjamin Walmer -- Old Mission Peninsula School
- Ajene Maxwell -- Public School Academies of Detroit
- Sean deFour -- Public School Academies of Detroit
- Monica Celai Hernandez-Alaniz -- Saginaw Covenant Academy
- Jennifer Steffes -- South Canton Scholars Charter Academy
- Carly Couchenour -- Vanguard Charter Academy
- Nicholas Lootens -- West Michigan Academy of Arts and Academics
- Tiffany Moody -- West Michigan Academy of Arts and Academics
