Inaugural Barbara L. Flaschenriem Classics Scholarship Announced

The Department of Classics is pleased to announce that Mr. Steven P. Krepp has been designated the inaugural recipient of the Barbara L. Flaschenriem Endowed Classics Scholarship for 2014-15.

Steven is currently a senior at GVSU and a Classics major in the Latin Secondary Education Program. Originally he had enrolled at the University of Michigan-Flint, where he was studying Biochemistry. It was there, however, that he discovered his interest in ancient history and decided to turn what was formerly a hobby into a career.

Having transferred to Grand Valley in 2010, Steven is realizing his potential in the study of Latin and Roman civilization and finding ways to share his passion for the ancient world with young people. An internship working with AP Latin students at East Kentwood High School has already given him an opportunity to do just that.

Steven writes that he approaches his prospective career as an educator as an opportunity for “giving back to the discipline that has given so much to me.”

Professor Flaschenriem was deeply invested in expanding access to University education for promising and committed students of Classics. We are absolutely delighted that these aspirations are being fulfilled by so many talented and deserving students.
