The potential environmental and socio-economic impact of climate change has educators seeking ways to prepare and engage the next generation about possible threats and solutions.

The GVSU Climate Change Education Solutions Summit will bring together about 160 K-12 educators and university faculty and scientists to share information about climate change education and perspectives on curriculum.

The event will take place June 12, from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center on Grand Valley’s Allendale Campus.

Participants will have access to interactive visualization tools, review teaching materials and develop lesson plans for classroom use. The summit will include panel discussions, round tables and workshops.

Keynote speakers include:

  • Jeffrey Andresen, state climatologist for Michigan and professor of geography at Michigan State University
  • Sarah Duffer, Earth and environmental science teacher in North Carolina, who has developed curriculum based on Paul Hawken’s Project Drawdown, which offers solutions to stop global warming.
  • Jessica Thompson, associate professor of communications at Northern Michigan University, whose research focus is team communication on complex ecological issues.
