Strengthening Practices Observation Tool (SPOT)

A Classroom Tool to Support Every Child’s Learning and Participation

Purpose

The Strengthening Practices Observation Tool (SPOT) helps teams observe, discuss, and strengthen evidence-based practices in early learning settings. The tool identifies the extent to which key indicators of high-quality practices are established and consistently implemented in the classroom.

Completing the Tool

Classroom staff and a qualified observer are encouraged to complete the SPOT independently or together. Ratings should be informed by classroom observations, staff descriptions of practices, classroom materials, and relevant documentation. Some practices may not be evident during a single observation, so additional information may be needed to accurately determine the extent of implementation.

After completing the tool, team members review ratings, discuss areas of agreement and difference, and reflect on current classroom practices. Through this collaborative process, teams identify strengths, establish priorities for improvement, and develop action steps to strengthen implementation.

SPOT is designed to support professional learning, collaborative reflection, and continuous improvement. It is not intended for teacher evaluation.

Key Features

  • Inclusive Focus: Emphasizes practices that benefit all children, including those with higher support needs.
  • Collaborative Approach: Encourages classroom staff and observers to share perspectives and reflect on current practices.
  • Action-Oriented: Helps teams identify strengths, establish priorities, and plan next steps for improvement.
  • Reflective, Not Evaluative: Supports professional dialogue and continuous improvement rather than teacher evaluation.
