Health Compliance Frequently Asked Questions

Should I obtain my immunizations now or after I'm admitted?

We recommend you follow your physician's recommendations and stay up to date with your immunizations and wait to submit any materials to GVSU until after you are admitted to the program.

What is required for my immunizations?

You will need to have a copy of all immunization records and titer results per the GVSU Health Compliance Policy.

What is a titer?

A titer (pronounced "tie-ter") is a blood test that checks your immune status to a vaccination or disease you may have had in the past. There are two types of immunity a person can have:

  1. Active Immunity
    1. The body's immune system produces antibodies and cellular immunity which usually lasts for many years to a lifetime.
    2. Develops from surviving infection or by vaccination.
    3. Every individual varies in response and production of antibodies.
  2. Passive Immunity
    1. Immunity transferred from one to another
    2. Develops from mother to infant or by blood product such as immune globulin.
    3. This immunity usually only offers temporary protection during a period of weeks to months.

Most titers take a minimum of one week to obtain results.

I already had a physical, can I use it?

If you have had a physical within the last year, go back to that physician and see if they will fill out the Health and Immunization form. If not, you will need to schedule another physical. Physicals must be within the last 12 months.

Where should I go for my physical and immunizations/titers?

This depends on each individual's insurance coverage. It is recommended to check with your insurance provider to ensure the most cost-effective means of completing the immunization requirements. GVSU Health Compliance Office has a list of places you can go if you are unable to visit your primary care physician or do not have one.

Where do I go for the criminal background check and drug screen?

The Health Compliance Office will provide a list of approved locations. For the most current information regarding the GVSU Health Compliance Office Background Check and Drug Screen Frequently Asked Questions Site.

Where do I find the online written tests?

Once admitted into the GVSU MAT program, the Health Compliance Office will notify you of access to a Blackboard Organization Health Compliance Site where each training and online tests are located.

Where do I find the technical standards form?

Access the technical standards document here or on the GVSU MAT Application Information site.

Where do I submit my health compliance papers?

Hold on to your immunization records for now. Once admitted to the GVSU MAT Program, you will upload your documents to Viewpoint. The university uses Viewpoint, which has a $25 dollar one-time fee for portal access. If you are already a user of Viewpoint, we will ask to have your account moved to the MAT current cohort tracker.
