Back to School: Exploring Art Around Campus

Published August 1, 2026 by Nicole Webb

As summer ends and a new school year begins, step onto any GVSU Campus and explore the art all around!

Take a walk down the halls of your brand new—or very familiar—dorm building to see the extensive art collection represented on the walls. Sit in a common room to do some last-second bedroom décor shopping surrounded by paintings and photographs. Each dorm building has a unique assortment of art, like The Feathered Fiddler in the Holton-Hooker Learning and Living Center. Find your new favorite corner of the dorm buildings to study or catch up with friends between classes!

If you’re one of GVSU’s student commuters, you can still find your very own space among art within the academic buildings. They’re rich with study corners, sunny spaces with cozy couches and charging ports for your laptop, and pieces like the Two Nomads / Two Pilgrims sculptures on the first floor of Mackinac Hall. Or, explore the Mary Idema Pew Library and read among ceramics like the Egyptian Olla (Water Jug).

Finally, find your lunch or a late-night snack at one of the dining halls. Explore all the art, then sit next to your favorite piece while you eat! Go to the Blue Connection for late-night wings and visit a painting of Cookie the dog.

If you want to learn more about the artwork you see while walking around campus, download the Art at GVSU App. You’ll find information about your favorite artworks, experience augmented reality with a selected group of artworks, and explore walking tours throughout all of GVSU’s campuses.

If you’re more of a homebody- don’t worry- you can enjoy the GVSU Art Museum collection right from the comfort of your home by exploring our online digital collection.
