“I read the comic books, and I thought to myself- I think I can draw something like this. So I drew, and it came out pretty close to it. Ever since then, I’ve been sketching.” – Andrew Qappik
Andrew Qappik is an Inuit-Canadian artist from Pangnirtung, Nunavut, Canada. He began drawing from a young age and was inspired by drawings in his favorite comic books. Qappik began working at a printmaking shop at age 11, where his uncles were also artists and encouraged him to continue drawing. His first prints were published in the 1978 Pangnirtung annual print collection when he was only 14, and they have been included in every Pangnirtung print collection since.
Today, he specializes in illustration and printmaking, depicting stories told to him by relatives and subjects he observed while traveling around Nunavut. He favors a naturalistic approach to his work, incorporating elements of native wildlife and the innate spirituality of the region. He is well-known for both his extensive body of print work and for his design of the Nunavut flag, as well as the territory’s coat of arms and official logo.
