Foster Jewell 1893-1984
Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Foster Jewell studied under impressionist painter Mathias Alten. Jewell’s landscapes include bodies of water and nautical imagery, prominently from the Great Lakes. He later moved to the coast of California, and ocean scenes became more common in his work. While painting was Jewell’s primary form of artistic expression, he also wrote poetry with his wife, Rhoda de Long Jewell. He was well known for his haiku poems, often publishing them through their company, Sangre de Cristo Press.
