Artist Profile: Joyce Tenneson

Published January 1, 2017 by Nicole Webb

Joyce Tenneson is considered among the ten most influential female photographers of all time. She earned her master's degree in photography from George Washington University after starting as a model for Polaroid. Still today, she primarily shoots with a Polaroid 20x24 camera.

Her work is often metaphorical, reflecting her inner journey. Early in her career, Tenneson had to fight to establish herself as a female photographer in an otherwise male-dominated industry. Her portraits strive to expose the inner life of her subjects. Tenneson brings the same reverence to her floral studies, treating flowers as more than just objects, but as living beings with unique personalities. Her floral images seek a moment of vulnerability, often showcasing buds, blooms, and eventual decay. Her work has been published in books and major magazines and exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide.
