Medium: Wood
Wood has been a foundational art medium since prehistoric times. One of the oldest materials used to create art, wood can be found in handmade tools, weapons, and sculptures, as well as paintings dating back to ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians and the Greeks. Carved wood became particularly popular during the Baroque era. Elaborate decorations and intricate designs were often on display in churches and palaces. While more modern materials, like plastic and metal, have lessened wood as a primary material for sculptures, many artists still today find wood to be a versatile medium with many varieties that can easily be hand-carved, stained, and painted.
