Mathias Alten Triptych

"Mathias Alten Triptych" is a three movement music composition commissioned by the Grand Rapids Symphony for ArtPrize 2015. Composers Jeremy Crosmer, Alexander Miller, and Bill Ryan each chose a painting by Alten to musically interpret and respond to. The composition will be performed during ArtPrize by six members of the Grand Rapids Symphony. The paintings can be viewed at the George and Barbara Gordon Gallery of Grand Valley State University, the largest public collection of Mathias Alten in the world. Mathias Alten (1871-1938) is a celebrated American regionalist artist, painting over 2,500 works of art throughout his life. Building from a traditional Barbizon and Tonalist landscape background, Alten began as a naturalistic scene painter and later transitioned into painting in an impressionistic style.
