About this Job

The AOD Peer Education Program is comprised of highly trained students who serve as liaisons and leaders to the campus community. Peer educators receive ongoing professional development in topics relevant to their needs, the needs of the AOD office and University Counseling Center, and the needs of the larger student body. This training includes preparation to provide education and resources on safe, smart, and responsible substance use, implications of substance use, and strategies to empower positive decision making. Peer educators have the opportunity to work with a variety of campus partners and staff members including Housing and Residence Life, the Office of Student Life, Grand Valley Police Department and other campus partners.

AOD Peer Educators are a crucial component of programming and help bring awareness to services, help promote important dialogue around substance use, and help challenge problematic substance use.

 

Job Requirements

Our vision is to establish a team of AOD peer educators who bring a variety of perspectives and desire to positively impact the GVSU community through programming and special events. We hope to have students from a variety of academic disciplines and experience. We are looking for peer educators who are professional, innovative, and motivated.

In addition to those qualities noted above, AOD Peer Education Program applicants must be enrolled during the 2023 calendar year and:

• Work well alone and as a member of a team
• Be able to devote an average of 3 to 5 hours per week (this time includes team meetings)
• Make a one-year commitment to serve as a peer educator (WINTER 2023 and FALL 2024) 
• Attend weekly team meetings 
• Attend weekly office hours
• Facilitate engaging presentations
• Represent the AOD Office at a variety of events
• Interact with a wide variety of students formally and informally
• Other duties as assigned 

 

Compensation

We hope that all of our peer educators leave the program with transferable skills and a positive experience that serves them long after they have graduated from GVSU! The AOD Peer Education program exposes students to a variety of professionals including psychologists, social workers, nurse practitioners, clinical trainees, faculty members, higher education administrators, and graduate students in education. Peer educators will receive a $410 stipend at the end of each semester. Students who do not contribute the estimated 48-80 hours per semester or who otherwise do not fulfill their obligations as a peer educator do not receive a stipend and may be relieved of their role as a peer educator.
