1. CLAS Voyage

Highlights:

The Voyage Team has created a final draft of the Curricular Frameworks for High Impact Practices. Over the course of the next few weeks and into next semester, Unit Heads will be facilitating conversations to explore the Frameworks and collect feedback, considering next steps.

The AAC&U has announced the participants in the 2023-2024 Institute on ePortolios. Our GVSU team of Kris Pachla, Cathy Buyarski, Bradford Dykes, Christine Rener, and Jackie Rander join 22 other institutions including Colorado Mountain College, Johns Hopkins University, Pima Community College, University of Arkansas, and Virginia State University in exploring the use of reflective tools for students throughout their higher education career. The work kicks off in January 2023.

Updates:

The CCEL website has been updated with opportunities for various partners to get involved and provide feedback. Look at the top of the webpage for links to get involved as faculty and staff, students, and alumni.

Action Items:

We continue to have conversations about courses which involve study away from the university. We are broadly defining “study away” as a course that has an experiential component that occurs domestically away from the university. Follow the link below to get involved in this conversation and provide your perspective on study away as a valuable pedagogy

We are beginning to have conversations with alumni in reflection on their CLAS experience and the ways in which it has prepared them for the variety of pathways available. If you know of an alumnus that might be interesting to talk to, please submit or pass along the Voyage alumni stories form

We are beginning to recruit students for focus group feedback on the Voyage next semester. If you have a student that you think would provide excellent perspective on the Voyage, please submit or pass along the student focus group form

2. Final Grade Information

REMINDER - CLAS Final Grade Reporting Deadline Fall 2022

Due to the recent notification that there will be Banner maintenance Sunday, December 18th from 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and Banner will not be available to faculty, the CLAS Deans Office has decided to return to the final grading deadline of before noon on Tuesday, December 20 for the fall semester only.  All faculty must report their final grades by this time.

Due to the holiday break that begins on December 22, it is imperative that grades be posted on time to give the Registrar’s Office sufficient time to finalize grades prior to the break. Any questions should be directed to AD Betty Schaner.

To all Unit Heads:

Please notify Betty Schaner and Mona Silva of the designees for routing grading emails.

In preparation for grading, please make sure you have accurate contact information for all faculty – tenured, tenure-track, affiliate, visitor, and adjunct – in case outreach is needed for missing grades. The deans office is requesting that each unit head reinforce the grading deadline with all faculty.

The Grading Process

Posting final grades in Blackboard does not complete the process. All grades must be posted in Banner. For instructions, go to Banner Grade Entry Instructions.

The Last Date of Academic Activity (LDAA) must be reported for all students who earn a grade of W, F or NC. For information and instructions, go to Last Date of Academic Activity Process.

Assigning Incomplete Grades - IMPORTANT

A grade of "I" (incomplete) is to be assigned only in truly extenuating circumstances and only if the student has completed most (minimum of 2/3) of the work required for the course.

The CLAS website provides detailed information on the considerations involved in assigning an incomplete grade. Any questions regarding incomplete grades should be directed to AD Schaner.

All faculty are required to submit an online Incomplete Grade form for each incomplete grade assigned.

Please review the university’s Incomplete Grade Policy. Note in particular the timeline for resolving outstanding incomplete grades. The CLAS Dean’s Office will be following this policy as units are contacted at the end of the fall and winter semesters regarding any remaining unresolved incomplete grades.

3. Researcher requests help

Joel Corbo ([email protected]), works on a Department Action Team (DAT) project Via Ed Aboufadel, we learned of his need for help with a department culture survey:

The DAT Project team is in the process of piloting a new undergraduate survey that collects perspectives on department culture. It’s essentially a student version of our existing departmental culture survey, except much more extensive. We aim to get 2000 undergrads to pilot it (a challenging goal!) and are incentivizing student participation with a raffle entry for a $100 gift card. To meet our goal, we are trying to reach as many people as possible in a variety of institutions and disciplines who teach/advise/otherwise work with undergrads to ask for their help in distributing the survey.

If interested, contact Joel.

4. Canceled contracts due to low enrollment

If a course is canceled due to low enrollment or other reasons, you are required to email Heidi Nicholson with the details so she can cancel or revise the contract.

5. The CLAS Teacher

Before Fall and Winter terms, the Dean’s office sends a publication to our VIS, AFF, and ADJ faculty. The VIS and AFF should have received it yesterday. We wait a bit before sending to the ADJ so more contracts can be finalized (thus a more accurate mailing list). If you hire after December 14, we ask that you forward a link to the publication to those late hires.

Active Learning Classrooms in MAK for 2023-24 (from the Registrar)

Two active learning classrooms are available in MAK.

The rooms are set up for dual delivery to remote and in-room students simultaneously, particularly for discussion-based pedagogy.  They include:

  • Multiple screens that can project both a gallery view of the remote students and instructional material,
  • Ceiling-mounted microphones so remote students or presenters can hear what in-class students say,
  • Cameras with pan/tilt/zoom control, full views of the whiteboard, and, in B-1-110, automatic tracking of instructor,
  • Dual monitor instructor stations,
  • Movable furniture.

MAK A-1-111 (capacity 38 students) is a CLAS dibs room and is already fairly heavily scheduled, but B-1-110 (cap 36) is a GV room and is currently lightly scheduled for Summer 23, Fall 23, and Winter 24.  Their current schedules are visible in the calendar files available at the Room Capacity page. Each unit interested in moving courses into one of these rooms should send a message specifying which specific sections they would like to move and which room to Mona Silva ([email protected]) by December 9.   After that deadline, the Colleges and Registrar will work to assign slots as well as possible.  Our goal is to do this quickly so that units can make use of spots in other rooms that are freed up by switching into one of these rooms.
