1. CLAS Voyage

Status Updates:

As part of the support of the Voyage, the CCEL website has been created and will be updated continuously based on new resources, information, and opportunities. The website can be explored at the URL www.gvsu.edu/ccel.

The Curricular Frameworks for High-Impact Practices have been updated and will be widely disseminated this week. Feedback is welcome and links will be available on the CCEL website.

Next Steps:

A clarification from the last Weekly Mailing: The current framework for Study Abroad is focused on experiences that leave the country. The Voyage team is also interested in “Study Away” experiences, those courses that include or are exclusively an off-campus experience (such as a semester in DC). We are beginning to reach out individually based on existing knowledge, but if you lead or teach such an experience, please connect with us so that we can learn more!

We continue to welcome any meetings with faculty across the college for ongoing understanding of the Voyage and faculty roles. If you would like to connect, please reach out to Kris or Rachel to schedule.

2. Student Success Strategies

A Students of Concern Flowchart has been crafted to assist faculty and staff in making appropriate student referrals. The flowchart has imbedded links to the referral forms or websites to make the process easier. Feedback should be sent to AD Schaner ([email protected]).

3. New mental health resource for Grand Valley students

The University Counseling Center is pleased to announce that it has partnered with Togetherall to provide a new mental health resource to Grand Valley students. Togetherall is an online community where students can anonymously share feelings and receive help from peers and licensed mental health professionals twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Togetherall will expand access to mental health support and complement existing clinical and community health services provided by the Center.

A brief video outlining all that Togetherall has to offer

Additional tools are available to faculty and staff as they support student wellness, including student mental health. We encourage you to download the GV Mental Health app, designed to assist those navigating a student mental health concern or crisis. We also encourage you to become a nationally recognized QPR Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper and familiarize yourself with the wealth of self-help materials available to students on the University Counseling Center website

4. Active Learning Classrooms in MAK for 2023-24 (from the Registrar)

Two active learning classrooms are available in MAK.

The rooms are set up for dual delivery to remote and in-room students simultaneously, particularly for discussion-based pedagogy.  They include:

  • multiple screens that can project both a gallery view of the remote students and instructional material,
  • ceiling-mounted microphones so remote students or presenters can hear what in-class students say,
  • cameras with pan/tilt/zoom control, full views of the whiteboard, and, in B-1-110, automatic tracking of instructor,
  • dual monitor instructor stations,
  • movable furniture.

MAK A-1-111 (capacity 38 students) is a CLAS dibs room and is already fairly heavily scheduled, but B-1-110 (cap 36) is a GV room and is currently lightly scheduled for Summer 23, Fall 23, and Winter 24.  Their current schedules are visible in the calendar files available at the Room Capacity page. Each unit interested in moving courses into one of these rooms should send a message specifying which specific sections they would like to move and which room to Mona Silva ([email protected]) by December 9.   After that deadline, the Colleges and Registrar will work to assign slots as well as possible.  Our goal is to do this quickly so that units can make use of spots in other rooms that are freed up by switching into one of these rooms.

5. Commencement, Saturday, Dec. 10, 3 p.m

5. Reminder - Giving Tuesday Donations

Donations received in your department for the Replenish Food Drive will be picked up by the CLAS Dean’s office student workers on Thursday, December 1 or Friday, December 2. If you would like to make a donation of nonperishable food or personal care items, see the List of Items to donate to Replenish. While the university Giving Team is focusing on Replenish, donors can give to whatever fund they wish, and these gifts will count toward the goal.
