1. Midterm Grading Reminder – From Assistant Dean Betty Schaner ([email protected])

Midterm evaluations are the week of October 10 and midterm grades must be reported in the Banner grading system before midnight, Monday, October 17. This is earlier than the posted deadline from the Registrar’s Office and allows the dean’s office staff time to clean up any last minute grading errors or missing grades. Some units may have earlier deadlines.

Midterm grades are required for all first-year students (including ALL new transfer students) who started Fall 2022 and for undergraduate students classified as less than good standing. Reporting grades in Blackboard does not meet the midterm grading requirement. Information on the process for reporting midterm grades is provided by the Registrar’s Office.

As a reminder, faculty can identify students who require midterm grades by checking the Class List Button on the Banner Additional Student Information page. You will need to log in with your GVSU network ID and password to access this site.

Unit Heads are to notify Betty Schaner and Mona Silva of the designees for routing grading emails. In preparation for grading, please make sure your unit has current and accurate contact information for all faculty – tenured, tenure-track, affiliate, visitor, and adjunct – in case outreach is needed for missing grades.

Unit Heads and New Faculty Mentors, please check with new faculty members, including affiliate, visitor, and adjunct, to confirm they understand the grade submission process. With the addition of all new transfer students, faculty teaching upper-level courses should be aware that mid-term grades may be required for more students than in the past.

2. Accepting Nominations for CLAS DEIA Committee

The CLAS Dean’s Office is seeking nominations for affiliates, tenure-track faculty, tenured faculty, and full-time AP and PSS staff (30 hours or more per week) to form and then serve on the CLAS DEIA Committee. To learn more about the committee, see the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility, and Belonging in CLAS webpage. Faculty and staff are encouraged to nominate others or themselves to serve on the committee. By November 11, 2022, nominations and self-nominations should be submitted using the Nominate for DEIA Committee form. Those accepting nomination and those who nominated themselves will be asked to submit a letter of intent of up to one page to Associate Dean Dwayne Tunstall ([email protected]) by December 7, 2022.

3. CLAS Voyage

Do you have an idea for a multidisciplinary or learning community course as a high-impact practice? The CLAS Voyage team is looking for pilots for the Student Learning Community category of high-impact practices. The Voyage team has funding to support the development of new courses or the modification of existing courses to align with the CLAS Voyage for the Fall 2023 and/or Winter 2024 semesters.

Student Learning Communities (SLC) are one of the high-impact practices that we are committing to offer our students as part of their CLAS journey. An SLC connects students with each other and one or more faculty members to collaborate together around shared learning goals. SLCs intentionally plan the curriculum to engage students in problem-based or integrated learning which is built on trust, accountability, and active participation.

Examples of SLCs may include:

  • Two individual, standard enrolled courses taught by two faculty that explore concepts in a multidisciplinary setting;

  • Two individual, standard enrolled courses taught by two faculty that coordinate a minimum set of assignments or incorporate a connected theme or set of connected activities to advance an integrated learning approach, build community, and engage students in robust team/collaborative work and co- and/or extra-curricular activities connected to the curricular content;

  • One course, doubly enrolled taught by two faculty and co-listed that explores concepts in a multidisciplinary setting; or

  • One standard enrolled course taught by one faculty whose course activity aligns with the high-impact nature of an SLC, specifically that students engage in authentic problem-based learning in an integrated fashion, collaborate and work in robust teams, and participate in co- or extra-curricular activities connected to the curricular content.

In order to ensure alignment with unit needs, please be sure to include unit heads in your ideation and proposal process. Successful pilot projects will agree to support data collection on SLOs, student and faculty experiences, and provide feedback about the high-impact nature of the course. Summer compensation to design or re-design curriculum will be paid in summer 2023. Up to 6 total pilots will be selected for launching in the 2023-2024 AY.

Please contact Kris Pachla with any questions, [email protected]

4. University Counseling Center will be hosting four campus-wide mental health screenings

  • All those who take part in the screening will have a chance to meet with a counselor, on-the-spot, to discuss their results.  Results are kept confidential.

  • Free gifts, including lip balms, pens, and aromatherapy putty, will be provided to those who participate.

  • If students will not be on campus the days of the screenings, they can participate any time by accessing the University Counseling Center’s online screening tool or visiting the mental health screening kiosks in Kirkhof and DeVos.
