1. Mandatory Reporting --some changes

Some changes we have made to the policy regarding Mandatory Reporters under Title IX. Since 2001, the Department of Education requires that higher education institutions respond when any “responsible employee” is informed of potential sexual harassment. The definition of “responsible employee” has changed a lot over the years, and one of the side effects is confusion about which faculty or staff members are required to report.

While the latest proposed regulations are not yet in effect, we are making the changes now to ensure clarity for our students, faculty, and staff. Therefore, unless identified as a confidential resource, all university employees are required to report to the Title IX Coordinator or Deputy Coordinator incidents of sexual harassment, sexual violence, sexual misconduct, stalking, and relationship violence.

Additionally, to ensure that our community also has confidential options available to them, we have designated staff and volunteers from the following offices as exempt from this reporting requirement:

Exempt Programs and Roles

  • University Counseling Center

  • GVSU Campus Health Center

  • GVSU Family Health Center

  • Gayle R. Davis Center for Women and Gender Equity

  • Employee Ombuds

  • Student Ombuds

Training for our campus community will consist of a brief (6 item) questionnaire to determine if you already understand your responsibilities. Those who cannot demonstrate that knowledge will be invited to participate in an asynchronous online training on reporting responsibilities.

We are also offering optional virtual training sessions for anyone who wants to dive deeper into how to support our community.

Virtual training sessions:

  • Thursday, October 6, 2022 (1-2 p.m.)

  • Monday, October 10, 2022 (3-4 p.m.)

Please  RSVP for a training session.

Please contact Kevin Carmody, Director of Title IX & Institutional Equity, if you have any questions.

3. Student Success Strategies

As part of the Your Health Lecture Series, join Daniel Campbell, PhD, for an informative conversation about autism spectrum disorder. This event will be held on October 18 from 7-8 p.m. at the Daniel and Pamella DeVos Center for Interprofessional Health, Rooms 102/104 and virtually via Zoom. This event is sponsored by the CLAS Academic Advising Center, Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, and Grand Rapids Community College. Attendees will learn about the role genetics play in inheriting autism spectrum disorder (ASD), increasing diagnosis rates and why high heritability is not the only factor in ASD risk, and environmental factors that may contribute to ASD risk. Please direct any questions to Alexis Schewe ([email protected]) or Dani Lauer ([email protected]) in the CLAS Academic Advising Center.

Approvals of Exceptions for Major and/or Minor Requirements

As faculty advisors, if a course exception or substitution is approved for a specific student, please send that information to the Records Office at [email protected]. This should be done at the time the approval is given so students and advisors will see an accurate account of completed and remaining courses on myPath.

Just a reminder, myPath is available to you and to students 24/7. There is no need to ask students to apply for graduation to see a copy of the report. If you have any questions about this, please contact AD Betty Schaner at [email protected].

Academic Alerts, Academic Misconduct Referrals and CARE Reports

Unit Heads and Faculty can refer students to specific teams of support staff for multiple reasons. The Dean of Students Office provides a one stop web shop for many of the referral options available for academic misconduct, CARE reports, Title IX reports and Campus Climate. The Navigate platform provides a direct link to make an academic referral for students who are struggling with course content, have excessive absences or other academic related issues. If you have any questions about these referrals, please contact AD Betty Schaner at [email protected] for assistance.

New Professional Development Funding Opportunity

To help defray the costs of attending or participating in professional job-related conferences, seminars/webinars, meetings, or other development opportunities, CLAS is pleased to announce the new CLAS Professional Development Fund for all staff (AP and PSS), as well as affiliate and visiting faculty. The use of funds does not require the presentation of papers at a conference or conference committee participation. Staff requests will be prioritized since they do not have access to PD funding from the university at this time. Eligible faculty will need to show that they have applied for funding from CSCE and/or FTLC before being considered for CLAS PD Fund support.

Learn more on the new CLAS Professional Development Fund webpage where you will also find the online application.
