The Crown I Wear

PRESENTERS: Takeelia Garret, ShayVonne Harris and Raven McClinon (Staff)

Black women's hair in the workplace and school has always been a topic of discussion. We will discuss a brief history of Black hair in the US, what the Crown Act is, and how it affects Black Women and girls. We will give the audience time to talk about what they have experienced and ask questions. The CROWN (Creating a Respectful and Open Workplace for Natural Hair) Act was created in 2019 by Dove and the CROWN Coalition, in partnership with then State Senator Holly J. Mitchell of California, to ensure protection against discrimination based on race-based hairstyles by extending statutory protection to hair texture and protective styles such as braids, locs, twists, and knots in the workplace and public schools. (Dove CROWN Research Study, 2019).  This research has stated that “racial discrimination based on hairstyles” begins as “early as five years old” and continues for the person's entire life. . Lecture/Discussion
