How to Live on Your Own: Laundry 101

First time living on your own? You aren’t the only one! One of the things that many students have to get used to is doing laundry on a regular basis. We have some tips to help you do it effectively and courteously.

Tip #1: Separate dark clothes from light clothes

This is the first step in effectively doing laundry! Separating your clothes by shade will prevent dyes from staining your other garments. Pro tip: Always wash new clothes with clothes of the same color! Clothing that is not pre-washed has a higher chance of staining your other clothes, especially red clothes and dark-wash jeans.

Tip #2: Use pods

Using pods instead of regular detergent will save you time and make sure you are using the correct amount of detergent for your load. Trust us, they are worth it!

Tip #3: Treat stains as soon as you can!

Stains occur often and getting rid of them can seem like a daunting task, but taking immediate action can reduce the chances of that stain staying in your favorite clothes. There are many ways to treat stains but having a good stain remover can make pre-treatment easier. Once you pre-treat the stain, make sure to immediately throw the garment in the wash.

Pro tip: Dish soap is extremely useful in getting out stains (especially oil stains) if used immediately.

Tip #4: Always check the dryer's lint trap before use

Dryer lint is one of the biggest fire hazards when doing laundry and it is important to make sure the lint trap is empty between each load.

Tip #5: Set a timer!

Be timely when changing machines or removing your clothes when they are finished. Clothes that stay in the washer too long will start to stink and get moldy. Be courteous to those who are also trying to use the machines by removing your clothes when they are done washing or drying.

Pro tip: Use your phone to set a timer so you don't forget about your clothes. Keep the ringer on and volume up.

Step #6: Find a time

Finding a time that you can consistently do laundry can benefit you as a student and help you establish a routine.

Pro tip: Once you find a weekly time to do laundry, put it on your calendar.
