10 Questions with Rahju Blackmon

Rahju Blackmon, 2019 Grad, Defensive Line coach at the University of Indianapolis

Where was your favorite place to eat on campus or off campus?

My favorite was Qdoba, but I ate most of my meals at the Connection after my first year. There was nothing like Vito’s pizza off-campus after a long night with friends.

Favorite place at GVSU to hang out with friends?

Undoubtedly the GVSU football locker room. A lot of my best memories from college were there.

Favorite class?

My first class with Dr. Coles, which I believe was like a “Today in Sports,” basically talking about current events in the sports world. I also enjoyed an African-American sports history class with Prof. Moore.

Favorite internship?

The summer going into my senior year I interned at AWP Sports, a sports training facility in my hometown of Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Favorite sport team or event?

In 2016 when we played Ferris State at home and broke the attendance record. We also won the game, which helps!

What is your current day to day work like?

My typical day changes so much throughout the year. I work long hours but love what I do and would not want to do anything else.

What is your favorite part of your job?

I love the accomplishment and satisfaction of winning a big game or landing a big recruit. It's my favorite part of my job. There's nothing quite like the pride and fulfillment that comes with seeing your hard work pay off and knowing that you've made a difference. It keeps me motivated and inspired to keep pushing forward and striving for excellence. But most importantly, I love the guys I work with, both players and coaches.

How did you land your first job?

For an assignment, I reached out to interview a few coaches and got in contact with the defensive coordinator from my previous university, which turned into an entry-level opportunity.

Any advice or inspiration for current Sport Management students?

The world is full of endless possibilities waiting to be explored. Don't be afraid to take risks and chase your dreams. Remember, the only limit is the one you set for yourself. Believe in yourself and let your passion guide you towards greatness. You have the power to inspire and positively impact the world. So go out there and make it happen! Lastly, the key to being happy is being grateful. You have never met an unhappy grateful person or an ungrateful happy person. Gratitude is the beginning of happiness. Happy people are always great to be around and get interviews, excellent references, and opportunities. Be grateful, and you will be happy.
