The Recreation and Wellness’ Outdoor Adventure program seeks knowledgeable and experienced students in the activities of backpacking, biking and rock climbing to help engage and grow an active outdoor community at GVSU. The Outdoor Adventure Leaders plan and facilitate outdoor and adventure-based activities as a part of the broader work of the Outdoor Adventures Collective.
- Paid training
- Valuable life skills practiced through the lens of backpacking, bicycling, & rock climbing: leadership, communication, team work, risk management, creative problem solving)

Start Date: Training: End of Feb | Work: Early March
Duration: Remainder of Winter Semester with opportunity to resume in Fall
Commitment: 5-10 per week; Some nights/ weekends required

Qualifications / Requirements
Ideal applicants are passionate about leadership and have a sincere interest in growing an active community of people at GVSU who responsibly enjoy the outdoors.
- Have experience and a solid understanding of fundamental skills in either Backpacking, Biking (road or mountain), or Rock Climbing.
Backpacking: basic camp-craft (fitting/ packing a backpack, tent setup, fire building, stove use, basic knots) & basic first aid
Biking: rules of the road/ trail etiquette & basic bike maintenance
Climbing: Equipment for top-rope and sport climbing, anchor building, cleaning a sport anchor, rappelling & belaying
Commitment to student development, leadership, and teamwork

Previous outdoor leadership experience
Pursuit of a career in an outdoor related field
Are dependable and comfortable talking to strangers
Specific responsibilities of the student staff include:
Coordinating outdoor gear rentals and maintenance
Leading the planning and facilitation of recreational and educational programs
Creating resources for the Outdoor Adventures Collective
Assisting students with creating appropriate trip plans
Assisting with marketing and promotion efforts, including but not limited to updating website(s) and social media groups
Attending all scheduled meetings and trainings
Adhering to all GVSU policies and procedures during all programming, on and off campus
Fostering an upbeat and friendly environment at all times
