Suffer the Children: Are Children Human Beings with Rights?

Richard Hiskes

Date and Time

Thursday, October 14, 2021 4:00 PM

Location

Tent outside Kirkhof Center (in case of inclement weather, in 2215/16 KC)

Description

The Human Rights program and the Department of Political Science are pleased to welcome our retired colleague Professor Rich Hiskes back to campus. Professor Hiskes will speak about his new book Suffer the Children: A Theoretical Foundation for the Human Rights of the Child (Oxford University Press 2021). Despite the fact that the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child was ratified over 30 years ago, we continue to act as if human rights do not pertain to children, as evidenced by the 10 million children who are enslaved and the more than 13 percent of the world's children who live in poverty. In addition, the future hangs in the balance for all children because of the global climate crisis. Join Professor Hiskes as he helps us understand the causes of these crises and what can be done about them.

Professor Hiskes is the founder of the Human Rights minor and retired professor of Political Science at GVSU. Prior to teaching at Grand Valley, he was Professor of Political Science at the University of Connecticut. The lecture will be held in the tent outside Kirkhof Center (in case of inclement weather, in 2215/16 KC), and refreshments will be served. This event is supported with funds from the Joseph Stevens Freedom Endowment.
