Safe Water for Muskegon County PFAS Well Testing Pilot Project
Safe Water for Muskegon County Pilot Project (see PFAS Taskforce for more info)
● A community-based pilot to support PFAS testing for private well users in Egelston, Muskegon Charter, and Moorland Townships
● 36 test kits available (12 per township), focused on areas outside state testing programs
● Townships will make decisions about how to use the test kits
● Residents collect samples and send them directly to the lab
● Results are confidential, with sharing encouraged with the townships and Muskegon County Public Health
● Follow-up information will be provided on PFAS, health considerations, and appropriate water filters
● The project is designed both to support residents and to learn what works for future efforts
Michigan State University Extension Survey (Wade Syers)
● Wade Syers shared a research effort focused on understanding how residents perceive PFAS and respond to home testing as a corollary to a large study of Michigan residents surveyed
● The survey will be provided to pilot project participants along with the test kits
● It will gather information on how people learn about PFAS, their concerns and questions, and whether applying for testing changes awareness or decision-making
● Results will help improve communication, education, and support for communities dealing with PFAS
