For many associate degree-prepared Registered Nurses (RN), completing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) expands their career opportunities and prepares them for graduate nursing programs.
Our RN to BSN program also features small class sizes which provide individualized, meaningful engagement with professors and fellow students to meet the needs of students working full-time.
Who is the RN to BSN program designed for?
- Students enrolled in associate degree in nursing programs
- Recent graduates with an associate degree in nursing
- Registered Nurses who have been working for any length of time
- Registered Nurses who are not currently employed but still have an active, unencumbered RN license
The program strongly emphasizes concepts to grow your career and deepen your community impact in alignment with the Future of Nursing 2020-2030 Report: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity. BSN prepared nurses are equipped to respond to social determinates of health including health equity, improved quality and safety for better patient outcomes, and evidence-based nursing practice.

Concurrent Enrollment
Are you still working toward your RN licensure? No problem.
Earn your associate's degree through a local community college then complete your B.S.N. at GVSU. Our concurrent enrollment programs can shorten the time it takes to earn your B.S.N. while enabling you to begin your career as an R.N.

Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in your state of residency before beginning 400-level courses.

RN to BSN Courses
Every student's academic journey is unique and is based on their prior coursework. The order of these courses, as well as the need for additional pre-requisites and general education courses, is different for each student.
The Office of Student Services (OSS) will build an individualized course plan just for you. First, explore the courses below to see some of the nursing classes featured in the RN to BSN curriculum. Then contact us here at KCON to get started on your academic journey.
Classes include content on research, evidence-based practice, safety and quality, professional identity, informatics, emergency preparedness, leadership, community, and population health nursing.
Year 1 nursing courses can be taken in any order:
- NUR 382: Foundations of Safe and Equitable Nursing Practice (2 credits)
- This foundational course examines key areas that impact patient care outcomes including national quality and safety standards, cultural sensitivity,
health equity and social determinants of health, and an individual's personal and professional identity.

- NUR 383: Essentials of Nursing Technology and Practice (2 credits)
- This foundational course will help nursing students develop essential skills in integrating technology, communication, and decision-making into their nursing
practice. The course provides an introduction to how nursing knowledge interacts with insights from other disciplines to enhance clinical judgment and patient care.

- NUR 352: Introduction to Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice (3 credits)
- Foundation for integration of evidence-based concepts into the provision of nursing care. An introduction to the process of developing research evidence
leading to acquisition of skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary for an effective consumer of research. Evidence sources are identified and explored for their contribution to evidence-based practice.

YEAR 2 courses are offered in a specific sequence through the final three semesters:
- NUR 427: Nursing Care within the Community (4 credits)
- Students will identify health risks and resources for individuals while enhancing skills in health promotion, illness prevention, and safety for individuals in diverse environments for effective professional practice. The student will develop and professionally communicate effective health promotion strategies for community-dwelling individuals.
- NUR 414: Collaboration for Nurses (2 credits)
- Post licensure nurses in professional practice have foundational and shared knowledge of interprofessional education and collaborative practice (IPECP) in terms of values and ethics, and the roles and responsibilities of other healthcare professionals. This course applies the remaining principles of IPECP through the lenses of interprofessional communication and team collaboration.
- NUR 412: Nursing Care for Populations (4 credits)
- This course focuses on the role of the baccalaureate-prepared nurse in assessing, planning, intervening, and evaluating health care needs for populations. Concepts such as culture, social justice, and vulnerability will be examined as to their effects on population health. Genetics, health promotion, and risk reduction will be emphasized.
- NUR 456: Transformative Nursing Leadership (4 credits)
- This Capstone course expands on the R.N. to B.S.N. preparation in the areas of member of the profession and coordinator of care. Through application of key concepts, this course further develops the student's professional identity, understanding of quality and health care systems, and the mechanisms for effective professional communication.
