Labrador Tea

  • Iñupiaq name: Papaksraq, Tilaaqiaq, Tilaaqqiq, Tilaaqqit, Tilaakiq, Sakiaguraq or Sakiagauraq
  • Family: Ericaceae
  • Scientific name: Ledum palustre
  • Distinguishing characteristics: Low shrub, 3-4 inches tall with hairy twigs. Green-grey leaves are thin and strappy with edges curled backwards. Pink-white flowers each with 5 petals bloom in clusters at the end of branches.
  • Similar species: While labrador tea is a member of the Ericaceae, it does not produce classic urn-shaped flowers like other members of the family do (blueberry, bearberry, etc.). For this reason, along with production of very fragrant leaves, this plant is very easy to identify.
  • Habitat: Dry, marshy tundra.
  • Best time to harvest: September and October.
  • Uses: Leaves for tea flavoring.
