Foundations of Online and Hybrid Course Development
Certification Requirements
Each faculty member who teaches a hybrid or online course at GVSU must be individually certified. The "Foundations of Online and Hybrid Course Development" self-paced training from eLearning is the internal option for faculty to meet their certification requirement. More information about the training requirement is available on the Pew Faculty Teaching & Learning Center website, including eligibility for a faculty stipend for adjuncts and visiting faculty.
About Foundations
The self-paced version of the Foundations of Online and Hybrid Course Development workshop has been designed to meet the University requirement that all faculty teaching hybrid and online classes be personally certified. Online materials and hands-on activities will guide participants through best practices associated with effective online teaching.
The content of this workshop consists of a number of content modules and a series of tasks that faculty are asked to complete. To complete this workshop successfully and receive their certification for online and hybrid instruction, participants must complete all of the required tasks.
Participants may work at their own pace, but are expected to complete the training within the equivalent of one academic term. Upon finishing the required work, faculty will meet one-on-one with a member of the eLearning team to review their progress and confirm that all requirements have been met.
How do I sign-up?
All faculty and staff are automatically added to our Foundations training Blackboard site. If you are a new employee and do not yet have your network account, your chair or department coordinator can request a temporary Bb account using the form available here. Once you have the name and password for that temporary account, you can complete the sign-up process described below.
Please complete the following steps to enroll yourself in Foundations:
- Follow this link which will take you the Blackboard site for the Self Paced Foundations workshop.
- If you weren't already signed into Blackboard, you will be asked to do so.
- Sign-in: If you weren't already signed into Blackboard, you will be asked to do so.
- Please remember that temporary account holders must use the "Non-GVSU Network Account Login" option.
- Enrollment: Once you've signed-in, you will see a "Self Enrollment" screen. Click the "Submit" button to complete the enrollment process.
- Confirmation: You will now see a "Success" screen, letting you know that you've successfully joined the workshop. Click the "OK" button to return to the workshop Blackboard site and begin.
Self Paced? What does that mean?
As a self-paced workshop, you can begin Foundations at any point. There are no fixed/scheduled sessions that you need to wait for, and you can complete the work at your own pace. We'll consider you "done" when:
- You've completed the Entrance Survey and worked your way through all the content in the Foundations workshop.
- You've completed all the tasks and activities throughout this site. Many of these activities involve building content in your practice test course.
- You've completed the Exit Survey and met with a member of the eLearning team.
- You've met the requirements within one academic term of when you started.
Participants who complete this workshop will be able to:
- Demonstrate course alignment in an eLearning design using Quality Matters standards
- Determine assessments appropriate for the online environment (Formative and/or Summative)
- Identify each “presence” in the Community of Inquiry Framework and integrate them into course development
- Demonstrate practices of Universal Design and accessibility in course development
- Develop engaging content appropriate for the online environment.
- Follow recommended practices related to copyright and intellectual property for the online environment.
- Apply quality standards in developing online and hybrid courses.
- Identify ongoing support resources and how to access them.
Why do I have to take a workshop before I can teach an online course?
Grand Valley State University is committed to providing our students with quality online and hybrid courses. Through the Grand Valley faculty governance process, the University Academic Senate has a standing committee, the Online Education and Microcredential Council (OEMC) in which the Director of eLearning Technologies is a member. One of the committee's primary responsibilities is reviewing policies that ensure faculty are adequately prepared for teaching in an online and hybrid environment. Becoming certified provides faculty with an orientation to the tools and resources needed to ensure a foundation of quality standards.
