Lanya Tran

Lanya Tran

Just two years ago, Lanya Tran joined Grand Valley’s Student Accounts Department as an accounting clerk. Her son, Dexter, was turning one, and she was looking for a way to reduce the stress that came with being a working mom. This was when she discovered What Mommies Do Best, a support group for working mothers that meets once a month.

She began attending meetings regularly and soon discovered that many others were under the same pressure she felt. “Everyone is going through the same things.” Meeting other working moms and getting advice from them was a great stress-relief to Lanya.

Going to the Mommies group is not the only way that Lanya tries to relieve her stress. She works out five days a week and says that not having access to junk food and sweets has really helped her to eat better. Dexter is also a big motivator for Lanya as he has many allergies, and she has to make sure that he is getting all the nutrition that he needs.

“If I have a goal to reach, that keeps me on track.”

If Lanya ever feels her health routine slipping, she asks her husband to help her stay on track. The Mommies group also offers her support and motivation for staying healthy. Lanya encourages others to go to the Mommies group, she says that as a first time parent, it really helps her to know that she’s not alone.

“When you’re happier outside of work, you’re happy at work, as well.”
