Department Faculty

"Thank you. While attending GVSU, I was consistently supported and encouraged. The faculty was outstanding and did everything possible to provide guidance while maintaining high standards. I earned both my undergraduate and graduate degrees from Grand Valley, and if I had to do it all over again, I would not change a thing. Thank you for pouring your time, energy, and heart into those you serve. Please know that everything you do, from the smallest details to the biggest efforts, truly matters. Go Lakers!"

"The trio of Dr. Daley, Dr. Stabler, and Dr. Zwart were some of the best educators and mentors I had during my time at GVSU. Always willing to talk and discus various topics during office hours. Or would make time to help with projects from other classes as well if you asked."

"I felt that the classes had an appropriate level of rigor and prepared me to enter the workforce. I appreciate all of the effort that goes into creating course content and providing meaningful feedback throughout the class."

"In hindsight, I should have majored in history! I hit my academic stride late during my undergraduate career but am glad I found the history department. After graduation, I joined the Peace Corps and have worked in the non-profit and federal government sectors since. I've spent over 20 years with the federal judiciary, to include 8 years as the Administrative Officer for the Federal Public Defender for the Middle & Western Districts of Louisiana. I attribute much of my public service career trajectory to the history courses I took at GVSU."

"I had such an amazing experience at GVSU. In a lot of ways, the History faculty and my coursework are the basis of my success. They taught me to evaluate and build arguments based on evidence, they taught me to think about information in many different ways, and to communicate ideas effectively."

"The field studies and opportunities for student leadership in the History Department paved my path to success. Also, professors such as Matthew Daley and Steeve Buckridge who were willing to mentor me and discuss the workings of university systems and roles of professors helped me prepare for my own position as a professor."

"My experience at Grand Valley shaped the person I am today, both professionally and personally. I owe my successes in life to Grand Valley and the History Department at GVSU, particularly the incredible faculty in the department. Dr. Stabler and Dr. Daley helped me develop at an impressionable time in my life, and they helped to develop me into the teacher I am today. I am extremely grateful for them as teachers and mentors, and because of them, I want to do what I can to give back to the History Department and the university. Please do not hesitate to contact me, particularly as it relates to any help with teacher mentoring or anything similar in nature. "

"Overall, had incredibly invested professors who made themselves available to students and supported them during and after undergrad. Appreciated the ability to take unique and specific courses."
