"Working: A Musical" showcases the dignity and humanity of workers

The show was based on a book of the same name by Pulitzer Prize-winning oral historian Studs Terkel. Originally performed in the 1970s, the show was reworked in 2012 and includes new songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, famously known for his 2015 hit musical "Hamilton."

GVSU Opera Theatre follows two sisters chasing their dreams in "Wonderful Town"

Sisters Ruth and Eileen Sherwood leave behind their ordinary lives in a rural Ohio town in pursuit of fulfilling their dreams in New York City. Filled with swinging show tunes, Grand Valley students will showcase how "Wonderful Town" captures the thrill of two sisters chasing their dreams. GVSU Opera Theatre will present multiple performances of "Wonderful Town" February 8-17.

GVSU students to team with Grand Rapids Ballet School to perform famous baroque music

The GVSU Opera Theatre will join forces with Grand Valley's Early Music Ensemble and Department of Visual and Media Arts, as well as the Grand Rapids Ballet School Junior Company, to reinvigorate baroque music for modern audiences. Performances of "Masquerade: A Baroque Extravaganza" will take place November 9-11.

Grand Valley students, staff member win Grand Awards for roles in local theater productions

The annual Grand Awards celebrates Grand Rapids area college and community theater performers and productions, and multiple members of the Grand Valley community won awards during this year's ceremony. Overall, Grand Valley students, alumni, staff and productions were nominated in 10 categories.

Opera Theatre to celebrate 75th anniversary of "Oklahoma!" with multiple performances

Running for more than 2,000 performances, "Oklahoma!" opened on Broadway in 1943. The show has withstood the test of time, boasting a 1944 Pulitzer Prize, numerous Tony Award nominations, national tours, international performances and even a 2003 film. To celebrate the show's 75th anniversary, GVSU Opera Theatre students will bring Rodgers and Hammerstein's first collaborative production to West Michigan with multiple performances February 2-11.

GVSU Opera Theatre to honor legacy of composer Kurt Weill during cabaret performances

The legacy of composer Kurt Weill can still be heard today by audiences in concert halls and theaters, and students will honor that legacy when GVSU Opera Theatre performs a selection of Weill's greatest hits. "A Kurt Weill Cabaret" will focus on the music of Weill (1900-1950), and the many lyricists who collaborated with him during his life and career. During the performances, taking place October 20- October 22, each of the 14 students in the ensemble will be featured in both solos and small group numbers.

GVSU students win multiple Grand Awards for "Sweeney Todd"

Multiple Grand Valley students received recognitions during the annual Grand Awards October 8 for their participation in the GVSU Opera Theatre production of "Sweeney Todd" in February. The cast, crew and production won awards in all six of the categories in which they received nominations. The annual Grand Awards celebrates Grand Rapids area college and community theater performers and performances.

Opera Theatre travels to Fleet Street to present "Sweeney Todd"

Vocal performance major Max Elkiss has a list of dream characters he would like to portray on stage during his career in theater. He will check one of those characters off of his list when he becomes "The Demon Barber" during GVSU Opera Theatre's production of "Sweeney Todd." Multiple performances will be offered February 3-12 in Louis Armstrong Theatre.
