Graduate student's empathy for a friend with vision loss leads to research that takes top honors at thesis competition
Afokoghene Odhu, a graduate student pursuing a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree, entered his research on diabetic retinopathy in the 3-Minute Thesis competition, an annual event sponsored by The Graduate School, and won first place and $500.

Two biostatistics graduate students placed in the top three of an international analytics competition held during the SAS Global Forum in April. Kayla Hawkins and Joe Lorenz were one of eight student teams who were selected as finalists in the competition out of a pool of 60 teams. Grand Valley's team examined data representing why more than 110,000 medical appointments in Brazil were missed by patients over a three-month period.

Fifteen graduate students, representing a variety of disciplines at Grand Valley, competed in the 3-Minute Thesis competition February 15 in Loosemore Auditorium in the DeVos Center. During the competition, sponsored by The Graduate School, students had three minutes to present their research to a panel of judges. Students were competing for prize money and a chance to advance to the Midwest Association of Graduate Schools 3-Minute Thesis Competition in Grand Rapids in April.
