Biostatistics students place in top three during international analytics competition

Two biostatistics graduate students placed in the top three of an international analytics competition held during the SAS Global Forum in April. Kayla Hawkins and Joe Lorenz were one of eight student teams who were selected as finalists in the competition out of a pool of 60 teams. Grand Valley's team examined data representing why more than 110,000 medical appointments in Brazil were missed by patients over a three-month period.

Chemistry faculty member named Professor of the Year

Deborah Herrington has been named one of the top educators in the State of Michigan by the Michigan Association of State Universities (MASU) - the coordinating board for Michigan's 15 public universities. Herrington, professor of chemistry and interim Chemistry Department chair, was one of three collegiate educators to receive the Michigan Distinguished Professor of the Year Award during a ceremony on April 20 in Lansing. The award recognizes exceptional contributions and dedication toward educating undergraduate students.

Premiere set for 23rd Summer Film Project "For the Birds"

"For the Birds," the 23rd annual Summer Film Project at Grand Valley, will make its debut on the silver screen during an upcoming screening. The event will take place April 26 at Celebration! Cinema North and IMAX, located at 2121 Celebration Drive NE in Grand Rapids. "For the Birds" was written by James Sturtridge, a senior majoring in film and video production who also served as first assistant director on the crew.

Ott Lecture to focus on fundamental problems in chemical physics

Daniel Neumark, professor of chemistry at University of California, Berkeley, has spent the bulk of his career implementing state-of-the-art experiments to probe fundamental problems in chemical physics - specifically, the nature of reaction transition states. Neumark will discuss his research during the Arnold C. Ott Lectureship in Chemistry on April 12.

Carillons will toll tonight to mark 50th anniversary of MLK assassination

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of his death, Grand Valley's Cook Carillon Tower and Beckering Family Carillon will join in a chorus of bells ringing at the same time tonight from carillon towers across the U.S., beginning in Memphis.

Visual and media arts seniors to showcase capstone works during multiple exhibitions
