Community event led by GVSU faculty, staff explores how math impacts nature
The 7th annual Allendale Community Field Day offered West Michigan community members of all ages the chance to learn about how math impacts the natural world. The free event, coordinated by Grand Valley faculty in collaboration with Allendale Public Schools, took place June 16 on the district's K-8 campus.

New Music Ensemble to perform at five national parks
The student members of Grand Valley's award-winning New Music Ensemble will travel 5,000 miles over the course of 17 days to perform at some of the most famous national parks in the U.S. The ensemble commissioned five composers to write original compositions for the tour inspired by the natural beauty of the selected national parks, which include Voyageurs, Glacier, North Cascades, Olympic and Mount Rainier. Auditions open for chance to become the "Voice of the Laker Marching Band"
"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the Pride of the Midwest - the Laker Marching Band!" This statement proclaimed by the "Voice of the Laker Marching Band" can be commonly heard bellowing throughout Lubbers Stadium during home football games at Grand Valley to energize the crowd for performances by the 200-member ensemble. For more than 20 years, the man behind the voice has been Tom Yackish, who has officially retired from the role. As a result, auditions are currently open in the search for the next announcer.

Endangered falcon chicks banded at Eberhard Center
The peregrine falcon is listed as an endangered species in the State of Michigan but might not be for much longer. Two falcon chicks were born in early May in a nesting box installed on the roof of Grand Valley's Eberhard Center on the Pew Grand Rapids Campus, adding more numbers to the diminished population in the state. On May 24, a team from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources traveled to the 9th floor of the facility to band the falcons.

Saxophone quartet with Grand Valley ties awarded with "one of music's highest achievements"
The Michigan-based saxophone ensemble, Donald Sinta Quartet, has received many awards and sentiments of praise since its inception, and now the group can add one of the highest achievements in the field of music to its list of accolades. The Donald Sinta Quartet received a gold medal in the Senior Wind Division of the 45th annual Fischoff Competition during an awards ceremony on May 13.

Students conduct research to help preserve two historical Grand Haven parks
Two parks in the Grand Haven area may continue to grow and thrive for many more years thanks to research conducted by a group of more than 30 Grand Valley students. During the winter semester, students collected and analyzed forest vegetation data in Duncan Woods and Mulligan's Hollow. The research was conducted in response to conservation concerns Grand Haven city officials expressed about the health of the ecosystems within the two parks.

Students use mobile devices to find inspiration to create art for exhibit
What can the use of mobile devices teach people about their physical and emotional identities, likes and dislikes, and their community and environment? This was one foundational question that provided more than 25 students with the inspiration to create three-dimensional works of art for the exhibit "A Selfie: The Body Extended." The exhibit will be on display in the Mary Idema Pew Library through May 30.

Speech Lab staff wins major awards in national research competition
Student consultants and faculty and staff members associated with Grand Valley's Speech Lab recently won top honors in the three competitive paper competitions at the National Association of Communication Centers' (NACC) annual conference in April. The NACC conference is an event that celebrates and shares progressive research and approaches to operating oral communication centers. Students, faculty and staff members from more than 25 universities around the country presented research for the competition.
