GVSU receives grant to research cure for Parkinson's disease

A team of researchers from Grand Valley, Van Andel Research Institute and Rush University recently received a $500,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health to test a possible cure for Parkinson's disease. The main targets of neuronal loss in Parkinson's disease are dopamine neurons, and this research project will test if the introduction of a modified protein, known as PM-Nato3, will protect those neurons from the toxicity of the disease.

President Thomas J. Haas announced the appointment of Gregory Sanial as the university's new vice president for Finance. Sanial is currently the chief of staff in the United States Coast Guard Fifth District (Virginia), having previously served as the Coast Guard's budget director, overseeing an $11 billion budget.

New teachers receive free classroom libraries through GVSU literacy program

Recent graduates from the College of Education who are teaching in underserved Michigan public school districts received enough free books to establish a classroom library. The free books were provided through the College of Education Michigan Literacy Project (MLP), which was established in 2014 by COE faculty members Sheryl Vlietstra and Megan Freudigmann. MLP provides classroom libraries to recent Grand Valley graduates all over the state who have been teaching three years or less in K-5 classrooms.
