Annual event to celebrate diversity in the mathematical sciences

An upcoming lecture at Grand Valley will explore and celebrate the increasing representation of women and minorities in the field of mathematics. Deanna Haunsperger, president of the Mathematical Association of America and professor of mathematics at Carleton College, will deliver the 2018 Mosaic Lecture on February 27. The presentation, "Making Connections: Lessons Learned From Women Mathematicians," will take place at 7:30 p.m. in room 103 of the Loutit Lecture Halls, located inside Henry Hall on the Allendale Campus.

Event will spotlight early women in politics

Nationally, more women than ever are running for office During an event on campus, Julia Bouwkamp and Jo Ellyn Clarey from the Greater Grand Rapids Women's History Council will discuss their research into the surprising number of women who ran for political office before 1920.

Faculty, staff members to host second free Repair Clinic for students

During the hustle and bustle of a busy semester, accidents happen and it is not uncommon for students to rip their jeans, lose buttons, break their eyeglasses or bust a zipper or backpack strap. An upcoming Repair Clinic will offer students a free opportunity to have all of the above scenarios and more mended by Grand Valley faculty and staff members. The free Repair Clinic will take place Thursday, February 22, from 6-8 p.m., in the Holton-Hooker Learning and Living Center's Multipurpose Room.

Culture and Coffee: Navigating Germany

The Van Andel Global Trade Center at Grand Valley will host "Culture and Coffee: Navigating Germany" from 8-10 a.m., February 23 at the L. William Seidman Center. Germany has the third largest export economy in the world with its automotive industry alone generating $151 billion in exports in 2016, consisting of 21.8 percent of total car exports worldwide.

Hauenstein Center namesake to posthumously receive Michigan Historical Commission award

Ralph Hauenstein, the namesake of Grand Valley State University's Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies, will be honored posthumously with the MAK Award by the Michigan Historical Commission. The award recognizes significant contributions to the preservation, understanding and promotion of Michigan's history through lengthy and visionary service.

Nursing grad student wins thesis competition

Fifteen graduate students, representing a variety of disciplines at Grand Valley, competed in the 3-Minute Thesis competition February 15 in Loosemore Auditorium in the DeVos Center. During the competition, sponsored by The Graduate School, students had three minutes to present their research to a panel of judges. Students were competing for prize money and a chance to advance to the Midwest Association of Graduate Schools 3-Minute Thesis Competition in Grand Rapids in April.
