Auditions open for chance to become the "Voice of the Laker Marching Band"

"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the Pride of the Midwest - the Laker Marching Band!" This statement proclaimed by the "Voice of the Laker Marching Band" can be commonly heard bellowing throughout Lubbers Stadium during home football games at Grand Valley to energize the crowd for performances by the 200-member ensemble. For more than 20 years, the man behind the voice has been Tom Yackish, who has officially retired from the role. As a result, auditions are currently open in the search for the next announcer.

Endangered falcon chicks banded at Eberhard Center

The peregrine falcon is listed as an endangered species in the State of Michigan but might not be for much longer. Two falcon chicks were born in early May in a nesting box installed on the roof of Grand Valley's Eberhard Center on the Pew Grand Rapids Campus, adding more numbers to the diminished population in the state. On May 24, a team from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources traveled to the 9th floor of the facility to band the falcons.

Saxophone quartet with Grand Valley ties awarded with "one of music's highest achievements"

The Michigan-based saxophone ensemble, Donald Sinta Quartet, has received many awards and sentiments of praise since its inception, and now the group can add one of the highest achievements in the field of music to its list of accolades. The Donald Sinta Quartet received a gold medal in the Senior Wind Division of the 45th annual Fischoff Competition during an awards ceremony on May 13.

The Grand Valley Bass Anglers Club took first place at the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Eastern Tour in Tennessee in May, winning a bid to the national championship in July.
