Students, faculty spread Laker Effect in Haiti through service projects

Eleven students from various majors traveled to Haiti this summer on a service-learning trip. During the study abroad expedition, the students distributed 150 water filter systems, led art workshops, taught motor skills activities, and explored the rich history and culture of Haiti.

Art expands health education in Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall

When Grand Valley State University constructs a new building, artwork from the university's permanent collection of more than 16,000 works is selected to tell visual stories that help connect students to curricula. The more than 280 works of art found in Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall, Grand Valley's newest health building, tell stories of community connections and the importance of health professionals in West Michigan and around the world.

The Thomas J. and Marcia J. Haas Center for Performing Arts on the Allendale Campus has been awarded LEED® Silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council, demonstrating the university's commitment to sustainable progress through innovative design and construction.

New director named for Design Thinking Academy

The Design Thinking Academy at Grand Valley State University helps students develop into inventive thinkers and problems solvers by utilizing the design thinking process. David Coffey, professor of mathematics, has been named the new director of the academy.

GVSU, Spectrum Health parking ramp construction underway

Construction of a six-level parking deck is underway on Michigan Street in downtown Grand Rapids. The project is a joint venture between Grand Valley and Spectrum Health System that will provide 1,220 spaces for Grand Valley students in the health professions and nursing programs, and for Spectrum Health employees.

Grand Valley State and Grand Rapids collaborate on affordable housing project

A project to bring new affordable housing to a Grand Rapids neighborhood is one step closer following action by the Board of Trustees of Grand Valley State University. At their July meeting, trustees authorized the university to lease property on its health campus in Grand Rapids to a developer who intends to build affordable housing compatible with the Belknap Lookout neighborhood.

Students compete in international regatta, train in Greece

Before competing on the Henley-on-Thames in England, the Grand Valley rowing team traveled south to Greece in June, where they trained in Kastoria and spent time exploring the country.
