The Graduate Student Within the Assistantship: Brennen Stevens
October 23, 2025
Master of Criminal Justice student, Brennen Stevens, has become a loyal and dedicated asset to the Writing Center at GVSU. Between his time at GV as an undergraduate student to now a graduate student, he has devoted six years to helping students with their writing needs. Stevens is currently a Graduate Assistant for the Seidman College of Business where he provides one-on-one support to all student writers. Brennen guides both graduate and undergraduate students in any writing needs they may have, although he specializes in technical writing. He has worked on many forms of technical writing such as resumes, cover letters, internal memos, business reports, scientific writing, requests for funding, and grant writing which he has the most experience in.
When he is not working with students on their technical writing needs, he can also be found leading professional development sessions for undergraduate and graduate consultants that work in the Writing Center. These professional development sessions help consultants learn effective ways to work with students and mentor them in their writing.
Brennen explains how his graduate assistantship has allowed him to continue expanding his experience in the Writing Center. He has been able to further refine and explore technical writing, which has also strengthened his understanding of grant writing. He has gained experience with forms of writing he hadn’t encountered often before, better preparing him to handle a wider range of writing genres in the future.
The Writing Center has become an important community to Brennen as he enjoys the culture within the Center and has befriended many people. He feels a sense of pride when watching people gain confidence in their own writing and enjoys being able to help people accomplish their writing goals.
Helping and mentoring is a great passion of Brennen and is something he greatly values in his future. After graduation, Brennen plans to continue his passion for helping others by teaching in higher education or by going into research. He is also interested in the Bellamy Creek Program at GV which is a great resource that provides the opportunity to pursue higher education for people who are incarcerated.
We wish Brennen best of luck in your future!
